Holly Cole

Price: 11.98

Holly Cole is back and sitting in the front row of jazz vocal talent in 2008. Her self-titled new album, her first in more than four years, represents an artistic watershed in this unique vocalist’s career. Featuring several arrangements by pianist Gil Goldstein, these eleven songs create a wicked and wise, film noir atmosphere, deepened by Holly’s interpretive authority and a swinging, muscular, pure jazz foundation. She’s superbly supported by a crew of A-list session musicians, on tunes by Mancini, Berlin, Porter, Jobim, and Holly herself.

Sad Wings Of Destiny

Price: 11.98

Frontman Rob Halford has considered this to be Judas Priest`s SGT. PEPPER, and it`s easy to see why. The album expanded upon the group`s debut by tackling a variety of styles, utilizing dynamics to striking effect, and establishing the essential guitar interplay between Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing. `Victim Of Changes` may be forever known for its snarling riffs and Halford`s startling final scream, but its subdued mid-section enhances the power of those elements. `The Ripper` offers up Victorian horror, while `Tyrant` and `Island Of Domination` thunder along with metallic machismo. The album has it softer side, however, notably the neo-classical rock instrumental `Prelude,` the melancholy piano ballad `Epitaph,` complete with crooning vocal harmonies, and the semi-acoustic existential contemplation `Dreamer Deceiver,` a long-lost gem in the band`s large oeuvre. Frankly, every track on this album is a winner, and SAD WINGS OF DESTINY would become the first of several albums from Priest that would forever transform the world of heavy metal.

Been All Around This World

Price: 11.98

Been All Around This World (ACD-57), the culmination of over 40 Jerry Garcia and David Grisman recording sessions, captures some of the finest and most unexpected moments from these influential figures in American music. Saving the best for last, producer Grisman has assembled an engaging program that features songs never heard sung by Garcia before now.Bob Dylan's The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest is given an endearing treatment with Garcia's smooth-as-brandy vocals intertwining with Grisman's light-as-rain mandolin textures. Their passion for soul music is triumphantly displayed on James Brown's I'll Go Crazy, an impromptu take that captures the pure spontaneity these two often regaled in.This 12-song expose of the acoustic side that Jerry Garcia explored with his longtime friend David Grisman reflects the many musical idioms that remained deep, common threads of their relationship. Country roots abound in the title track (a Grateful Dead favorite), George Jones' Take Me, Webb Pierce's I Ain't Never and Jimmy Martin's Drink Up And Go Home. Their mutual love of traditional folk and blues is evident in Merle Travis' Dark As A Dungeon and Nine Pound Hammer, I'm Troubled and an instrumental version of Handsome Cabin Boy.Accompanying Garcia and Grisman is the rhythm section of Jim Kerwin (bass) and Joe Craven (percussion/fiddle) along with Matt Eakle (flute), all members of the David Grisman Quintet. Other musicians featured are John Kahn, George Marsh and Sally Van Meter on an alternate rendition of Jimmie Rodgers' Blue Yodel #9 from Garcia's last recording session.
